REALagility™ – Management Track®
(Leadership Training)

In this programme BERTEIG will accompanying a cohort of leaders and senior-level managers to learn proven techniques and help them to develop new skills on-the-job.

Experienced Real Agility™ Agile Coaching experts at BERTEIG will support leaders to apply these practices directly, ensuring that the organization sustains its progress into the future.

How BERTEIG Can Help

The courses outlined in the table below are being offered to BMO to support the need outlined in the RFQ.

It is important to note that the courses are referred to by BERTEIG as the Scrum Master Bootcamp with CSM® and the Product Owner Bootcamp with CSPO®. BERTEIG offers significant extra value in these Learning Events and the ‘bootcamp’ moniker reflects the additional components to the training sessions. These two courses lead to certification from the Scrum Alliance™.

In addition, the REALagility™ – Management Track is how BERTEIG describes systematic leadership training for enterprise clients. The first two Milestones of the programme consist of ‘cohort selection’ followed by the ’10-step initial training’, which takes approximately 3 months to complete.

There are 5 Milestones in the whole leadership training programme, and much like an MBA programme, it takes about 18 months to complete and graduate at the highest level.

CURRICULUM and LOGISTICS
What is included in Scrum Masters, Product Owners training, Leadership Training?
Do you include material/training around soft skills (e.g., coaching, communication, decision making, facilitation etc?)

Yes, BERTEIG training is focused on learning soft-skills through doing. The course is set up in a way that participants practice the role of the Scrum Master. They get to facilitate the Scrum artefacts such as sprint planning and the scrum retrospective. Learning these soft skills as part of the training is what makes the learning memorable and builds confidence in the participants for when they return to their teams.

As a confident Scrum Master, participants will create adaptive product teams in any business environment. In addition, participants who successfully complete the Scrum Master Bootcamp with CSM, will be able to do the following:

  • Facilitate 3 Sprint Planning techniques, 3 Daily Scrum techniques, 3 Team Coordination techniques and 3 Sprint Retrospective techniques.
  • Coach teams on how to remove basic obstacles that prevent them from achieving high-performance and real agility.
  • Enable a team to follow the Scrum process to deliver great products and continuously improve quality.
  • Describe Scrum to others including the roles, meetings, artefacts & principles, and benefits & pitfalls.
  • Identify the environments in which the application of Scrum would lead to excellent results.

Yes, BERTEIG training is focused on learning soft-skills through doing. The course is set up in a way that participants practice the role of the Scrum Product Owner. In the class participants get to prioritise the work of the Scrum team by working with ‘the stakeholder’ in the simulation to establish the most valuable increments of work.

The training is set-up to allow constant dialogue with the scrum team to establish estimates and build a prioritised list of product backlog items. Learning these soft skills of negotiation, good communication and decision making culminates in confidence for staff when they return to their teams. In addition, participants who successfully complete the Product Owner Bootcamp with CSPO certification, will be able to the following:

  • Manage your backlog by using good decision making protocols in order to achieve maximum ROI from the product backlog
  • Create a Product Backlog that puts business priorities first.

Yes, BERTEIG leadership training is focused on learning soft-skills through doing. The training programme is set up so that participants practice how to be a manager that exhibits leadership qualities.

By going through the modules of the programme, the participants focus on each leadership skill in-sequence. They get to practice facilitation, coaching skills, holding successful retrospective sessions and how to enable and launch Agile teams.

Learning these soft skills as part of the systematic programme is what makes the learning memorable and builds confidence for managers in an enterprise role.

Building leadership skills within the organisation leads to more effective long-term results as decisions are made by people closest to the work rather than external consultants.

The leadership training teaches participants how to engage with stakeholders, communicate needs effectively and facilitate effective change using techniques learned over the course of the programme.

Do you include practical exercises and practical application?

Yes, over the two days of the training, participants are immersed in practical exercises. They will practice three techniques for planning Sprints, three techniques for running Daily Scrums, three techniques for creating visibility, three techniques for doing retrospectives.

Participants will have an immersive simulation experience where they are the Scrum Master for four consecutive Sprints, building a comic book that tells the story of the three little pigs and the big bad wolf.

Yes, over the two days of the training, participants are immersed in practical exercises. They will briefly discuss what makes a great product vison and then practice creating a product vison with their team.

Participants will practice engaging stakeholders by building a ‘product box’ which they will then present as a group. Participants will learn about product users by generating a persona for that user with their group.

Furthermore, staff in the Product Owner training will learn about the importance of ‘business value’, what the key metrics are and how it pertains to the product vision.

Yes, the leadership training for managers is designed to give participants practical exercises as part of the systematic learning programme.

The practices covered in the first 10 steps of the development programme culminate in discussion, practice, theory and review of key resources depending on the programme module (step) being facilitated.

For some of the steps, practical exercises are included in the workshop session when participants meet with the BERTEIG consultant.

For other steps, the practical exercises are completed between each workshop with the BERTEIG instructor. For these steps, the time spent together in the workshop session is devoted to review of the exercise and importantly, the practical application of the skills learned in the participant current role.

The steps in the programme will cover practices that explore the Real Agility Conceptual Framework, Corporate Culture and Agility, Complex Systems, Team Agility, Mentoring & Training, Facilitation, Coaching and Launching Teams.

For synchronous learning, do you offer only VILT (virtual instructor-led training)? Are there any plans to revert to in person training; and/or will VILT continue to be an option?

Yes, VILT will continue to be an option for the foreseeable future. We are willing to consider in-person training , there will be a premium applied for in-person learning events.

What is the frequency of training?

We normally offer Two (2) Scrum Master Bootcamp with CSM® classes per month.

We normally offer Two (2) Product Owner Bootcamp with CSPO® classes per month.

The client decides the frequency of the Real Agility™ Management Track.
Because it is a systematic educational programme for leadership training, the cadence of the modules (steps) can be accelerated from every two weeks, to weekly sessions, if the client chooses.
What suite of tools do you use to deliver training?

We use Zoom for video conferencing*

We use Miro as the whiteboarding tool, where participants will work on exercises together with the rest of the group. Miro is a very effective tool that allows participants to collaborate together on the same exercise using text, pictures, post-it style notes, charts, and a host of other ways to interact and create content.

We have a Learning Management System; the BERTEIG Learning Portal, where staff can see the agenda for the course, see information about logistics and certification, as well as be able  to download additional materials. Other than to sign-in at the beginning of the class, participants do not need to keep the Learning Portal open for the duration of the class.

For private courses, an alternative set up to Zoom and Miro can be applied for an additional fee.

*The courses are interactive and staff must be “present” virtually on Zoom and visible with a webcam for the duration of the course·

Is there practitioner support* i.e., forums for Q&As, ask an expert, case studies – topic discussion, skill-based topics, external agile networking capabilities

Yes, a main component of the bootcamp is the inclusion of free Q&A at the end of each training day. This time is extremely valuable for participants and their teams; challenges can be addressed and guidance can be given by the BERTEIG instructors on how best to approach problems in their work place. This support is valued at up to $3000 and is provided as a value-add for all bootcamp participants.

In addition, participants of the Scrum bootcamp training courses are afforded a 1-hour coaching session for their team with a BERTEIG expert. This coaching session can be scheduled shortly after the training or after a few weeks later. The coaching session gives participants an excellent opportunity to review how they’ve implemented the practices from the course into their real-world setting and to consult about ways to improve.

Case studies can be shared with participants to help them solve their particular challenges, if the case study is similar in nature to the challenge being faced. BERTEIG has 5 published case-studies and many more on which to draw from.

Supplemental MicroLearning™ Events are included in the registration price; participants who register for the Scrum Master Bootcamp with CSM, are given a free seat in any upcoming Kanban for Scrum Masters training session of their choice.

If participants have completed 2 or more BERTEIG learning events, they are invited to join the BERTEIG Professional group. This group is for elite practitioners and entitles group members to special offers, benefits and BERTEIG is proud to vouch for group members by listing their LinkedIn profiles on the BERTEIG website.

Furthermore BERTEIG Professional members are invited to join monthly networking events with BERTEIG expert consultants on compelling and practical topics such as “how to enact meaningful change”.

Between the sessions with the consultant, participants can interact with BERTEIG consultants and expert staff who can support them with their needs. BERTEIG senior consultants are also available to support the participants via e-mail and social media tools.

The systematic leadership training delivered by BERTEIG focusses on coaching and facilitating for leaders and their organizations. The learning of students is nurtured over the course of the programme. It is a train-the-trainer syllabus that is designed for sustainability, and practitioner support is at the core of what makes it possible.

BERTEIG has its own chat tool (similar to Slack™) that can also be enabled if the participants would like to use such a communication tool during their learning.

Real Agility™ Management Track is a systematic educational programme to help managers advance and sustain transformation in their organization as a confident leader.

There are several Milestones as part of the programme:

  • Practitioner I – team launches and quick wins
  • Practitioner II – coordinating across teams, resetting failed teams, ready for challenges
  • Elite Manager I – transform the department and mentor junior managers
  • Elite Manager II – ready to run the Management Track yourself

Successful participants receive BERTEIG certification at the end of each Milestone e.g. the “Practitioner I” certificate.

Can registration for learning program/tools etc. be integrated with BMO? i.e., integrate enrolment via Workday?

Yes, this is possible because BERTEIG has built its own e-commerce platform with APIs. BERTEIG is happy to explore integration with BMO engineers to see how to establish integration with BMO tools and programs.

Yes. Yes.
How much of the content is based on industry recognized content ™ versus internally customized content?

Although BERTEIG training is based on The Scrum Alliance™ learning objectives that must be met in the 2-day courses, BERTEIG customised learning events go far beyond that minimum expectation.

BERTEIG consultants use highly-tuned practice exercises to support participants in learning the objectives of the class, over, for example, using lengthy theory sessions to impart the knowledge.

The proprietary learning materials that BERTEIG has developed, is a significant differentiator that BERTEIG instructors pride themselves on, and through feedback from participants, classes are constantly updated and tweaked.

The curriculum cannot be overhauled from the original core competencies that are delineated by the certifying body, however classes can be tailored to meet the needs of BMO groups, for example, focus can be given on writing clean-code and the use of test-driven development for BMO engineering teams.

(as Scrum Master Bootcamp with CSM)

The content of the leadership training is based on industry recognised tools and techniques that have shaped the most successful companies in the world. These practices are outlined by the books that are used in the delivery of the Management Track programme and BERTEIG instructors tie the learning from the books back to practical guidance in each step of the programme.

Since this course is owned by BERTEIG and the intellectual property (IP) is customised, there are fewer restrictions on the content and BERTEIG is happy to tailor the curriculum to meet the needs that BMO expresses.

For example; part of the participant learning can be to prepare BMO teams to fulfil governance and risk management obligations to prevent regulatory, legal or audit failures. A leader will need to learn how to establish these protocols and coach the teams to confidently carry out the tasks.

Is the cost for accreditation included in the cost of the course? Yes Yes Yes (BERTEIG accreditation)
MEASUREMENT
Do you have proficiency assessments? – graded or non graded? Completion based? Trackable? Are they customizable?

Yes, prior to arriving in the virtual classroom for the Scrum Alliance™ certified training, participants must make time to do some preparatory work and pass the Scrum Foundations Test that is the final part of the pre-work.

Participants should expect the preparatory work to take about 5 hours. This preparatory work and passing the graded test are required to attend the live portion of the class and for certification.

Yes, the grade each student receives is trackable in the BERTEIG Learning Portal system and access to this data can be shared using APIs.

Yes, the proficiency assessments are customisable for BMO; for this to occur there is significant development cost involved, as new courses will have to be created by the BERTEIG consultants.

(as Scrum Master Bootcamp with CSM)

Proficiency assessment is built into the leadership training as part of the Real Agility™ Management Track programme. Participants must successfully complete activities and other assignments to graduate the programme.

Note: Not everyone who starts this leadership training is expected to graduate; each step of is graded and if participants fall too far behind or their level of work falls below the threshold needed to stay in the course, they will be asked to reapply.

Yes, the proficiency assessments are customisable for BMO. The cost incurred for development depends on the level of customisation needed.

What sustainment tactics do you have in place to ensure understanding, reinforcement and adoption?

BERTEIG has spent 17 years delivering Agile training that transforms people, teams and organizations. The knowledge and experienced gained in this time has allowed BERTEIG instructors to develop training curriculum that is 100% simulation-based.

Learning through practice rather than through theory ensures that participants return to the office and their groups, confident in their abilities to perform the new duties.

Participants have full access to the Miro board from the course. They can go back and look at reference materials from the class , diagrams that explained concepts, or the notes taken during the course.

Furthermore staff can revisit the BERTEIG Learning Portal to go over the course agenda and re-familiarise themselves with the topics covered over the training days.

Additional MicroLearning Events™ ensure that staff continue their education after the main 2-day learning event. These courses are normally 3 hours in duration and held to the same high standard that BERTEIG instructors are known for.

The Scrum Alliance™ requires that participants collect 20 hours of Scrum Education Units (SEUs) to be eligible to recertify for their designation. SEUs can be gained for facilitation of ‘outside of work hours’ agile meetings, volunteering in agile events, reading agile books and articles, watching agile related videos or by taking other agile eLearning courses. These activities reinforce the learning from the bootcamp learning events.

BERTEIG Professional members are invited to regular meet-up events where time is allocated after the presentation for Q&A and further discussion.

BMO staff are offered unlimited re-takes (space permitting) of the core 2-day Scrum Alliance™ training courses – this is an exclusive offer for BMO staff only and provides an opportunity for staff to re-engage in the learning.

(as Scrum Master Bootcamp with CSM)

The Real Agility™ Management Track ensures that the managers in the programme understand each step before moving to the next step and that they are able to confidently demonstrate the learning from the module.

There is a significant time commitment required by each participant as part of this leadership training and though ample support is offered, participants must have the volition and drive to sustain the pace of the course and the requirements.

For example; participants are required to be present for a half-day workshop every week / every 2 weeks, and “homework” (e.g. reading, research, application) is required with each step of the programme.

In addition; on-the-job support / coaching / observation is recommended as part of the programme to reinforce the learning. This coaching is outside the scope of the leadership training, but is strongly advised to support the learning.

Participants may “fail” the programme if they neglect to put in the required effort to keep up with the materials in each step. Not all participants are expected to move from one stage to the next – most participants who are natural leaders will complete the Apprentice and Practitioner stages of this programme.

Leadership Coaching/Training Highlights:

  • 2001: Advised the CIO of Charles Schwab, Geoff Penny, on Extreme Programming and Agile in the IT department as to how it may improve their existing Rational Unified Process implementation.
  • 2003: Workshop for CTO Rich Freyberg and direct reports of Schwab Capital Markets on Agile methods, focus on XP. The highlight of this experience was telling Rich to “shut up” because he was constantly interrupting the proceedings. (We had a long pre-existing relationship before that event – I didn’t get fired.)
  • 2004-2005: Consultant, coach and trainer at Capital One in Richmond Virgina. Worked closely with another consultant on a major assessment/report for the CTO Gregor Bailar and then worked with numerous senior managers as a coach and consultant. Also worked closely with a number of well-known agilists including Mary Poppendieck, Michael Hamman, Michael Spayd, and others.
  • 2005-2006: Certified Scrum Master class for the Director and Senior Managers at Siemens, Trango division, co-trained with Jeff Sutherland. Followed up with them for the next 18 months as their Agile coach and trainer, working directly with their senior managers.
  • 2006: Coach at RWDI working with the team on a Scrum adoption. A team-level crisis escalated to working with one of the VPs on a financial model to show the value of focus and rapid delivery.
  • 2007: Custom training for Dan Lesage, Software Development Director at Adobe and his senior managers. Focus on solving change management problems.
  • 2008: Lots of work with leaders and managers at Research in Motion (RIM) – BERTEIG got fired, eventually. Leadership didn’t enjoy looking at cultural issues in the organization. No names here, but it was a great learning experience for us to see how deeply culture matters in attempting to do a transformation.
  • 2009: Another bad experience: delivered a private training for OpenText to the CIO Nicholas Oddson and his senior leadership team. We totally bombed it and were not invited back. Lots of learning here too.
  • 2009-2011: Strategic consulting, executive presentations, Agile Coach Training for RBC and the newly-formed Agile Centre of Excellence.
  • 2010: Training, coaching and consulting at Suncor in Fort McMurray. First major engagement in a non-software Agile Transformation. Worked with Darin Zandee, Superintendent responsible for 200 people on the mine site, and his senior managers. Included one-on-one leadership coaching for Darin.
  • 2010-2011: Group leadership coaching and workshops for Cam Crosbie, AVP then CIO of Equitable Life, and his business peers. Focus on helping Cam and his peers function effectively as a leadership team in the context of an Agile Transformation.
  • 2011-2014: Training, coaching and consulting at Schlumberger Beijing Geosciences Centre working with Pearl Chu, Technology Centre Manager, in Beijing. Included leadership coaching for Pearl, Agile Coach Training for senior and mid-level managers reporting to Pearl.
  • 2012-2013: Leadership coaching and consulting over 18 months for Frank Leong, VP Business Technology and his colleagues including Michael O’Sullivan, President. Included a systematic leadership development program of our own design which has evolved over time to become the “Real Agility Leadership Track” and the “Real Agility Management Track”.
  • 2013: Executive presentation on Agile Transformation for FreshBooks leadership team.
  • 2014-2015: Multiple leadership presentations and workshops with Simon Palmer, CIO and his senior leadership team at LoyaltyOne. Focus on leading with integrity during their Agile Transformation.
  • 2016: MAJOR HIGHLIGHT: Attended and received Leadership Circle Profile Certification™. The Leadership Circle system has informed our work with leaders ever since.
  • 2016-2017: Focus on internal organizational development at BERTEIG and personal leadership development. Did no significant work with leaders in client organizations this year in order to focus on cleaning up our own house, so to speak.
  • 2018-2020: Design and deliver a custom leadership program for Scotiabank over 18 months covering mindset, Agile methods, leadership development, lean thinking, community development, technical excellence, and organizational change. Roughly equivalent to an MBA focused on leadership and organizational agility. Delivered to a cohort of 21 senior and mid-level managers.
  • 2019: Work with my own coaches to develop their leadership coaching ability, primarily focused on our engagement with Trader working with Steve Maidment, Chief Delivery Officer.
  • 2021-2022: One-on-One management agility coaching for the senior leadership team of a global luxury brand in the hospitality industry.

Mishkin worked for Peters Surveys Ltd. as a junior surveyor’s assistant in the late 80’s and early 90’s on and off. One of the big projects Mishkin assisted with was the Husky Oil Upgrader project just outside of Lloydminster, SK. Mishkin did both field work and site map calculation work for the grading of the site prior to construction.

Mishkin travelled to Belize on a one-month service project with a number of other youth in early 1990. Mishkin’s flights were eventful including a last-minute aborted landing due to a storm around Cancun. Mishkin travelled throughout Belize including Corazal, San Ignacio and Dangriga.

Mishkin has a few hobbies and past-times that generally follow in a 10-year cycle: custom Lego building, robotics, coin collecting, mathematics, and music composition. Of these, Lego and mathematics are currently at the fore of his attention.

Mishkin grew up in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and loves that city very much. He hasn’t lived there for many years, but when he returns he often is overwhelmed by emotion as he visits favourite spots such as the University of Saskatchewan campus, the bridges and river valley, and the Broadway strip.

Petri Heiramo Certified Scrum Trainer® (CST)

A Certified Scrum Trainer® (CST) with extensive global training experience and an impressive professional background; Petri is particularly interested in looking at Scrum and Agile from a holistic approach to improving the competitiveness of businesses.

I gravitated toward processes early in my career. After getting my professional feet wet with some coding, project management, and QA, I moved to a process manager role. At the time, our organisation used waterfall processes to deliver software to our clients, and it was thus my job to figure out how to do it right. I’ve always loved games, and to me, projects can be seen as games. There are certain rules, many constraints, and it’s an exciting challenge to try to find the best strategies to play the game successfully. Getting paid for figuring out how to do projects and software right was really something awesome. I never thought I’d make games my career.

We did waterfall well. We used short increments, usually one month long, and iterated our plans with the customer as they also learnt more about what they really want. We were a liked and successful partner to our customers. But late in 2005, when I read Extreme Programming Explained, I realized how to really make software right. And I found my true passion that has carried me to this day, to this place, and will take me forward for the rest of my professional life.

After studying Agile for a while, I started coaching our teams to use Scrum in real project work. Over time, we found what worked and what didn’t. Our knowledge and skills in Agile became a business differentiator and our success driver in the market. Simultaneously, I found that I really loved helping others succeed with Agile. I worked to get the Certified Scrum Trainer accreditation and got it in November 2008. I started running certification courses along with my other duties and ultimately, went independent in 2010 to focus solely in training and coaching.

Now, more than 10 years later, I’m joining the BERTEIG team to leverage my knowledge and trainings skills in a company that wants the same thing as I do – make our clients and course participants successful. Being at BERTEIG gives me what I’ve missed for a decade – peers that further challenge me and who I can challenge with my knowledge. Together we can learn faster and refine our trainings and coaching better than we could do alone.

Over these years, I’ve gained experience in working with many teams in many organizations, and I’ve worked in genuinely Agile organization to further improve its Agility. I’ve gained a deep appreciation for the impact Agile can have both at a team level and at organizational level as a leadership approach. I have seen the human impact and I’ve seen the business impact. I’ve become an avid advocate of true teams and allowing people to take ownership of their work to the benefit of both the person and the business. I believe Agile is the today and the future.

Testimonials:

“Derived from the fact that our organization has approximately 100,000 employees, it is an organization with a lot of structure, processes, protocols, therefore the projects carried out have long and bureaucratic project flows, however, due to needs and priorities we challenge ourselves to be able to perform a disruptive technological tool, with the objective that thousands of our employees are empowered and have a virtual library of contents and information that will help them to fulfill their roles.
With this Agile accompaniment we have broken paradigms, in this specific project, Agile techniques (Scrum) has given us the necessary support to convince employees that change of mentality, mainly with a collaboration approach, incremental deliveries, better way in the form of negotiation with internal clients, external (suppliers) and the most important thing as we do from day 1 more tangible results.
Thanks to Coach David we have found the right paths in the way that intervenes and guides us promptly in the project.” (translated from Spanish) – Andrés L Nava, Talent Development Leader, Coca-Cola
